Click here to order our Parent Resource Kit! (PDF)

The newly revised and expanded Parent Reference and Resource Kit is available from the Federation of Invisible Disabilities. The kit brings together existing documents, guidebooks, and relevant information surrounding issues and concerns of caring for children with invisible disabilities so that parents, caregivers and others have one handy reference or guide. Written by Cathie Camely and Cherry Cheetham, the information is provided in a clear and useable format. It is contained in a binder so that additional information can be inserted.

THE INFORMATION KIT INCLUDES INFORMATION ON:

  • Invisible Disabilities (e.g.: Autism, ADD, Learning Disabilities, etc)
  • Policies (e.g.: related to education system)
  • Individual Education Plans (e.g.: guidelines)
  • Advocacy (e.g.: ways of advocating, problem-solving, tools)
  • Appeals (e.g.: school board appeal procedures)
  • Teamwork (e.g.: working together with professionals for your child)
  • Assessments (e.g.: eleven questions parents should ask, guidelines)
  • Working with health professionals (e.g.: parent's guide to doctors, disabilities and the family, selecting a physician, parents as case managers)

  • Parenting (e.g.: information on feelings, discipline, homework, etc.)
  • Networking (e.g.: using parent power to make things happen)

Parents with special need children, particularly those with invisible disabilities such as Autism, ADD, brain injury or learning disabilities, will find the Federation of Invisible Disabilities' newly revised Parent Reference and Resource Kit an excellent source of information and guidance. The kit brings together documents, guidebooks and information on issues of caring for children with invisible disabilities. Topics include advocacy, teamwork, assessment, working with health professionals and parenting, among many others. Introductory summaries of each invisible disability are clear and useful.

Presented in a 3-ring binder, the book is clearly laid out and easy to use. The table of contents is detailed and many good websites and resources are listed. The kit is a good reference and 'sane companion' to daily caring for special needs students. Says one reviewer: 'I wish we had this book when we were trying to get an assessment and IEP (Individual Education Plan). It is a great resource. I would recommend it to any advocacy group or parent dealing with the education system about a child with special needs.'
