<arrow> Program to Benefit Parents of Children with Anxiety Disorders - 19 May 2005

FIDS, in partnership with the Saanich School District and the Ministry of Children and Families (MCFD)will be initiating the parent component of the FRIENDS program.

FRIENDS for Life is an Australian-developed, world-leading school-based program, that helps children cope and manage anxiety and depression. It aims to prevent the development of serious mental disorders, emotional distress, and impairment in social functioning, by teaching children how to cope with and manage anxiety both now and in later life.

As a result of a successful pilot project, MCFD committed to province-wide implementation of the FRIENDS for Life in the 2004/05 school year.

FRIENDS, an early intervention and prevention program developed in Australia in 1998. Teachers, school counsellors, special educators and child and youth mental health clinicians are trained to identify children with anxiety disorders and to deliver the program to student sin grades 4 and 5.

The parent sessions will provide parents with information about the early signs of emotional distress in children and with information about the FRIENDS program. By involving parents in the program the likelihood of maintaining the resiliency strategies learned by their child increase. The parent training session will also provide parents with information about the early signs of emotional distress in children.

Anxiety disorders are the most common mental disorders in children. Over 64,000 children in BC are affected. It is estimated that between 15 and 20% of kids feel anxiety that diminishes the quality of their lives. Furthermore, the prevalence of anxiety among children is rising.

This project is supported with a grant from The F.O.R.CE bckidsmentalhealth.org

<arrow> Fostering Community Acceptance - 19 May 2005

This fall FIDS will offer a new workshop to the community. With the financial support of the Victoria Foundation and TD Canada Trust, FIDS will develop and deliver a workshop that will increase the understanding of Invisible Disabilities, the unique behaviours, and the difficulties individuals and families affected face. By increasing awareness we can reduce the stigma and barriers children and families experience, and create the opportunity for this unique group of children to participate fully in all facets of community life.

Due to the hidden nature of neurologically based disabilities, many are shocked to learn that 15% of the population in British Columbia is affected with an Invisible Disability. There are approximately 50,000 individuals living in the Capital Regional District with Invisible Disabilities, over 7,000 of these individuals are children under the age of 19

The workshops will be focused at community agencies and businesses that work with children and their families. Presentations would be suitable for: schools, community neighborhood houses, community centers, summer camps, college, police and fire departments, and probation and residential workers. If you would like to more information contact the coordinator at dsher@fids.bc.ca

<arrow> From Rights to Action” workshop - 19 May 2005

This popular workshop, facilitated by Cathie Camley, will highlight school law in BC and how it affects children with special needs and their families. We will then take it one step further, teaching parents practical skills to ensure that their child’s rights are actualized. Participants will learn how to develop a strategy for bringing their concerns and goals forward to school officials so they will be acted upon.

Cathie Camley is well known for her advocacy work and is the author of "Becoming an Effective Advocate for Your Child." She is also the author and facilitator of the "Parent Advocacy Training Program" and co-author of the “Parent Reference and Resource Kit.” Cathie is the mother of three children, two of whom have Learning Disabilities.
